Dr. Robert Oates, MD FACS

Welcome Patients and Professionals. A little bit about myself: I am currently Professor of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Urology. I direct both the Fellowship and Residency programs for the Boston University Department of Urology and collaborate both nationally and internationally on numerous research projects with many top investigators. I have a busy clinical practice involving all aspects of male reproductive medicine and surgery and am a recognized expert in all forms of microsurgical reconstruction – including vasectomy reversal.

After graduating from my Urology residency at Boston University, I was fortunate to be offered one of the early clinical fellowships in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery with Dr. Larry Lipshultz in 1988 at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

I returned to my roots here in Boston and have been on the attending staff ever since. I have presented my research at local, national and international meetings on innumerable occasions (symposia, podium, poster, roundtable) and am often asked to speak about various aspects of Male Infertility at such venues as well.

In terms of my male reproductive surgical research, I have been honored to have authored the first papers on the intentional cryopreservation of epididymal and testis sperm, now a common approach in many IVF centers. I have been actively involved in clinical and laboratory research on the genetic basis of male reproductive failure, having directed the research leading to the first peer-reviewed manuscript linking Congenital Bilateral Absence of the Vas Deferens and mutations in the Cystic Fibrosis genes. I have authored the definitive publication on the clinical aspects of the Y chromosomal AZFc microdeletion, not uncommonly the genetic basis of severe male reproductive failure.

I have served as President of the New England Fertility Society in 2013-2014, President of the Society of Male Reproduction and Urology (SMRU) in 2012, and President of the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction (SSMR) in 2006. I have been the Program Chair for many societal meetings and most recently served as the Scientific Program Chair for the entire American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) Annual Meeting in 2012. At present I am on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine as well as a WHO Guidelines Task Force on Infertility and have ongoing clinical research projects involving the genetic basis of male reproductive failure and Klinefelter syndrome.
